Getting help for yourself
- • Any reason to call is a good reason. You do not need to be in crisis.
- • Find a quiet moment if you can, but you can also call from anywhere.
- • Share as much or as little as you want. You can hang up at any time.
- • If you prefer, ask a trusted person to sit with you while you call.
Getting help for someone else
- • Listen without judging, and take what they say seriously.
- • Offer to call 9898 together, or call on their behalf for advice.
- • If they mention ending their life, do not keep it secret. Stay with them and call.
- • Teachers, leaders, health workers and police can also call to refer someone.
Referral and follow-up
If you need more than a phone call
Warm referral
We connect you directly to hospitals, safe houses, the Women and Children Protection Unit, legal aid or counselling, instead of just giving you a name.
Mobile Clinic
If you cannot travel, our Mobile Clinic may be able to visit your community (Montserrado, Bomi and Margibi).
Follow-up
Where it helps, we check in afterwards to make sure you reached the support you needed.
Move To Heal
Our youth mental health clinic is preparing to open. Until then, 9898 is the way in.
Confidentiality and privacy
How we protect what you share
Calls to 9898 are confidential. What you share is kept within the team that supports you.
There are a few situations where we may need to share information to keep someone safe:
- when someone is at serious risk of harm to themselves or others;
- when a child is at risk of abuse;
- when the law requires it.
Even then, the counsellor will explain what they need to do and why, wherever it is safe to do so. Information shared in reports is anonymised and combined, so no individual can be identified.
