When someone close to us is struggling, it is natural to want to fix things. Often the most helpful thing is simpler: to listen, to stay, and to help them find support.
Start the conversation
- Choose a quiet, private moment
- Say what you have noticed, kindly: "You have seemed very quiet lately. How are you really doing?"
- Give them time to answer, and accept it if they are not ready to talk yet
Listen without judging
- Let them speak without interrupting
- Avoid telling them to "be strong", "pray harder" or "forget about it"
- Take what they say seriously
- Thank them for trusting you
Help them find support
Offer to sit with them while they call 9898, or to go with them to a health facility. If they mention hurting themselves or ending their life, do not keep it a secret. Stay with them and call 9898 together.
Look after yourself too
Supporting someone can be heavy. It is okay to talk to someone about how you are feeling. You can call 9898 for yourself as well.
