After violence, an accident or another shocking event, strong reactions are common. These steps can help.

After something frightening happens, such as violence, an accident, or seeing someone hurt, many people feel shaken for days or weeks. You might have nightmares, feel jumpy, avoid places that remind you of what happened, or feel numb. These are common reactions to an abnormal event.

In the first days and weeks

  • Go somewhere you feel safe, with people you trust
  • Try to rest, eat and drink water, even if you do not feel like it
  • Talk about what happened only when and if you want to
  • Avoid alcohol and drugs as a way to cope
  • Return to small daily routines when you can

If you have experienced violence

Your safety comes first. Call 9898 at any time. A counsellor can help you think about your safety and connect you to medical care, a safe house, the Women and Children Protection Unit or legal support, if you want that.

When to ask for more help

If reactions are still strong after a month, are getting worse, or are stopping you from working, studying or caring for your family, a trained counsellor can help.
